GHM Top Ten List: What to Take in Your Diaper Bag
Posted by Missy W. @ 5:09 PM
Thinking about the Top Ten Lists got me excited, so I am posting another one today.
OK, so I am just going to say right now that I’ll definitely be going over the “ten” part of the Gearhead Mom’s Top Ten List more often than not. There’s just a lot of gear out there and I love a lot of it. As your child gets older not all of the items are needed every time. This is also a great baby shower gift to give. Get a diaper bag (off their registry if they have one picked out) and fill it up with all these items. It makes that first trip out of the house a little less scary if you feel prepared.
1) The diaper bag. Yes, you need something to hold your gear. No, it does not have to be a $158.00 Petunia Picklebottom bag. Sorry Miss Picklebottom, it was either you or diapers for the month! We have the Skip Hop Duo and like it a lot. It’s gender neutral enough for both Rog and I to use and has a nice slender design. It’s a little tight on space but you keep your back from breaking in return.
2) Diapers. I think with newborns who need to be changed a lot more often, it’s good to leave the house with six diapers. At two years old, I usually just grab two or three for Sy.
3) Wipes. I love the Kirkland brand wipes from Costco. Non-alcoholic, no scent, comes in a huge box so you don’t run out quickly.
4) Diaper cream if Junior is subject to rashes. I have always had great luck with Desitin 40%. I have tried so many different creams, look out for that top ten list.
5) Disposable bags. For storing blowouts or soggy clothing. I don’t like leaving a stink-bomb diaper at a friend’s house, and this way I can make it back home without my haz-mat suit.
6) Extra clothes. Sy still goes through an outfit or two a day, especially if we go somewhere muddy. I keep a shirt and pants in the bag and add socks and a jacket if the weather is cooler. I see that BabyGap has a new organic line for wee ones.
7) Fluids. Whether this is powder formula and a bottle of water, a sippy cup of milk or water, make sure you always leave the house with something for the kiddo to drink. Unless of course you are the primary lunch truck, then lucky you, you have more room in your bag for lip gloss which you’ll rarely remember to wear. It’s also nice to remember yourself once in a while. Throw some liquid in there for you, too (and maybe an energy bar if you’re really planning ahead).
8) Some form of germ-be-gone. I like to use the CleanWell brand since it is not as toxic to little ones as the alcohol based hand sanitizers. It smells like thyme (since that’s a primary ingredient) so if you are allergic to it, look for another non-alcohol based brand. They have some foam ones that work pretty well.
9) Toys. Whether it’s a rattle or a mini-magna doodle, this will make your errands just slightly more bearable if you have a cranky travel partner with you.
10) Sunscreen. After your baby is over six months or so, sunscreen is a good idea on a daily basis. I really like Mustela’s sunscreen for babies. Gentle on their skin and it smells good, too. I think the one that comes in the stick is a little rough on their skin when they are little.
OK, OK, here’s just one bonus item!
11) Snack Trap. This is brilliant invention. It has a soft rubber top with slits in it so it keeps the snacks in the cup and not all over the floor of the car like usual. Flight attendants thank me often for bringing it on board.

Great list! I’d also add band-aids, especially for toddlers. And, I carry disposable forks/spoons incase we are out to eat, along with a bib. (I have a 1.5Y and 3.5Y)
