I am a toy gearhead. I am a mom. Therefore, I am Gearhead Mom. I review the good, the bad and the (often) ugly in the world of baby and childhood gear.

Memorable Mealtimes

Memorable Mealtimes

I’ve been running this game by my friends because I just can’t decide if it’s lame or not. The Enchanted Table by Memorable Mealtimes has a series of cards with thoughtful conversation and contribution cards to enable interesting conversation at the dinner table. It also has a somewhat odd (and HUGE)  illustrated table centerpiece with images from classic children’s stories. A conversation card sample: “If you could do something impossible, what would you do?” Contribution card sample: “Arrange the table in an unusual or fun way.” Jenny’s point was that most families don’t eat together anymore so it might actually be helpful. Other friends wondered why they couldn’t come up with those thoughts on their own. AJ’s family plays high/low - high point and low point of their days, it always brings up a new talking point.

I think the game has a good idea. Talk with your children and family about interesting and meaningful concepts. I just wonder what your kids will think if you have to pull a card out of a box in order to ask them a thoughtful question. So do you hide the game and cram before they come home? Or leave the contribution cards out and use the conversation cards as a game at another point in the day?

It reminds me of that beer commercial a few years back where they asked each other questions like, “Ginger or Maryanne?” What was that beer? I remember the commercial but not the beer. Nice marketing. Ah, Rog says it was Budweiser.

We started a dinnertime routine of each family member sharing their happiest and most disappointing parts of their day…our four-year-old loves this and reminds us if we forget.  I think the point is to have an impetus to eat together and to pay attention to one another.  I could see my daughter loving to pull cards for dinnertime conversation, and I could see myself saying, “you can pull another card AFTER you eat ONE MORE GREEN BEAN.” smile
