Gearhead Mom

I am a toy gearhead. I am a mom. Therefore, I am Gearhead Mom. I review the good, the bad and the (often) ugly in the world of baby and childhood gear.

Pink Sparkly Fairy Wings, Oh My

Pink Sparkly Fairy Wings, Oh My

Sy is not a girlie-girl at all. She likes to pick her own outfits in the morning and they generally include stripes and spots and mismatched socks, sometimes with a dress on top for color. She usually looks like the pile from the bottom of the dryer, but I think it’s fabulous. The only princess she knows of is the Paper Bag one. But now, at the cusp of three, she is really getting into dress up. She clonks around in her plastic high heels and refuses to take off her “butterfly wings” that we have. They are a sad pair, those wings. Hand-me-downs like most of her girlie dress up gear, they are torn and limp, threatening to unravel at any minute.

I feel I owe it to her to get her a pair of really fluffy, girlie, pink wings for her birthday. But where to start? I grew up wearing black and listened to New Wave. I don’t know how to be a fairy princess or even where to look. So I called on Dawn from Pink With Sparkles to review her favorite fairy accoutrements for us. Her picks after the jump.

Thanks for the tips, Dawn. I’ll be seeking out your advice when my daughter declares the only thing she wants to wear to school is a fluffy pink tutu.

My girls love to play fairies with their pal Rachel.  They base it loosely on Tinkerbell and Barbie’s Mariposa.  There’s always skipping, throwing rocks into a magic pond, fleeing from an evil fairy queen (Usually played by Rachel’s mom since my acting skills stink!), and donning the all-important fairy wings.

If you don’t know your fairy wings, you’d better read up. For little girls in a pixie state of mind, there are no substitutes for fancy, sparkly, tricked-out wings.  Feeble attempts to improvise household items for wings will not do. They’ve gotta have the real deal.

Two online boutiques that stock the right stuff for fairies are Fuzzy Me and My Fancy Princess

Fuzzy Me specializes in tutus and tutu-related garb, but they also sell much more, including sweet, fancy fairy wings. Fuzzy Me’s Pink Sparkly Wings have a dash of glitter and a floral accent. Very pixie-hollow-nature-forest-fairy.

My Fancy Princess, as the name implies, is one stop shopping for all things girlie.  So, naturally, they sell some killer fairy goodies.  If your little winged one wants to rock wings with more bling, the Pink Sequined Fairy Wings may be just the look that she’s after.  For your flashy, uptown fairy-types.

So, whether you have a “country fairy” or an “urban pixie”, there are wings out there for every magical girl.  Hmmn…I wonder what the suburban fairies are wearing for wings these days?
