A Salvo Against Food Strikes
Posted by Missy W. @ 11:01 AM
Before you read further, I’d just like to remind you that I am not a member of the medical profession and this is not medical advice. This is just my rambly opinion about vitamins. Always check with your doctor first before giving your baby something new!
Sy will literally go months only eating once a day, a couple of select dishes (long live macaroni and cheese with peas). It used to make me totally freak out. The doctors were suggesting I take Sy to specialists, they wanted to discuss “sensory integration issues” etc. My sister talks me off the mental parenting wall about once a day, and she reminded me that Sy is an incredibly sensitive kid, so whenever anything is bothering her, food is the first to go. Cutting a molar in my house means that Sy will only drink milk and maybe eat a few strawberries if she’s feeling saucy.
Even though I try to keep the raging worry at bay, I still want her to have some sort of nutrition. Her pediatrician recommended PolyViSol drops. Gross! They taste like metallic-strawberry drops. I think Sy is brilliant when she turns her head and yells when I get that bottle and dropper out. The ones without iron are not bad, but she’s pretty much sworn off the stuff. Sy’s pediatrician also recommends cooking in an iron skillet as the iron will sneak its way into the food. Yeah, well, that’d be great if I could get the kid to EAT what I had lovingly prepared in said iron skillet.
So during her earlier food strikes I’d resigned myself to the fact that Sy would never get any nutrients aside from milk. I felt bad about it, but you can lead a horse to water… But then my friend Andie mentioned some vitamin powder that she’d been using with her son, Max. I decided to give it a whirl. Viva la Rainbow Light NutriStart Multivitamin Supplement!
The taste is bearable! It’s sweetened with banana and does not have that afore mentioned metallic yucko taste to it. It is easy to administer, the dosage for toddlers is an entire packet mixed in with cold food or drink. During a food strike, I’d slip it into her milk bottle. At first I worried that the milk was combating the iron absorption, but again, one can only worry so much in a day, right?
I split the packet up over the course of three six ounce sippy cups of milk so the taste of the vitamin did not overwhelm her finicky palette. Micky’s daughter Kara refused to drink the end of the bottle that had the powder in it, she must not have liked the gritty texture. Our little gourmands. I would have added it to something else like apple sauce if Sy liked that.
Alas, at two years old, Sy now rejects the milk if the vitamins are in it. She really loves her milk. I have since switched over to Kangavite chewable (not gummy) vitamins. See my full review.
And yes, in case you were curious, they still make Flintstones Multivitamin Chewable Tablets. Yabba dabba doooo!
Snapshot:
• Some iron supplements cause constipation, but I have not seen a bit of difference with Sy. I assume that just depends on the kid and their constitution.
• The vitamins are a bit pricey. They are at my local health/herb store, which I like to support, but as usual, they are cheaper at Amazon.
• Texture is a turn-off to some wee ones.
