Editor’s Note: Melissa B, mother of FOUR girls, is here today to chime in about her favorite sling. Thanks for actually sitting down and writing about this, Mrs. B. I don’t know how you have time to wash your well-coiffed hair, let alone write a review!
The “Over the Shoulder Baby Holder” is my sling of choice. The padded blue sling of mine is a little dowdy, but it’s great for tiny, colicky babies riding a la hip. It also comes in handy for your screaming three year old who does not wish to leave Chuck E. Cheese’s with the rest of the family. My plan of attack: strap the baby in the stroller, wrestle said three year old into the sling; tighten strap and haul all four overly tired kids to the car, where no one else has to witness the break down. This has helped me at the park in the same situation.
The sling adjusts using nylon rings and tension, with an extra ring sewn in for safety at the bottom. It has a nice amount of padding on the shoulder and comes in three different sizes based on the weight range of parent. I can adjust it with one hand with my little (or bigger) baby. This cozy sling is really great for carrying babies while you water the lawn and pick up dog poop. Just keep one hand on the sling/child while you bend over to scoop the poop into the little biodegradable dog poop bags, all the while being careful to fling poop into outdoor garbage bin with contaminated hand and then go wash hands in the bathroom while your baby pulls your hair, all from the safe confines of the sling and an arm’s reach away from all those icky germs.
Snapshot:
This sling comes in a multitude of colors and sizes, and even organic cotton.
It may not be beautiful but it does the job well for kiddos of various size and age.
Endorsed by the Red Cross and chiropractors alike.
Made in USA.

I sometimes feel like the queen of the baby carriers, as my girl is just seven months old and we’ve used three different kinds.
We started out with the Peanut Shell. It’s one piece, so there’s nothing to adjust, which was key for this nervous new mom. The fleece is especially cozy and easy to use, and she would just sleep in there like a little bean. It was also my secret weapon during the witching hour - pop her in, turn on the music and bounce bounce bounce.
At about two months my left shoulder cried uncle and we moved to the Baby Bjorn (the fancy one with lumbar support that my husband had insisted on. I think it made him feel sporty somehow.) I loved the Bjorn and feeling like we were really free to go anywhere.
At four months my shoulders could no longer take the weight of my quickly growing gal and we graduated to the Ergo, which really is the queen of all carriers. You can wear your baby facing you, on your back, or on your hip, and I believe until the tot weighs 40 lbs. The weight is primarily on your hips and feels worlds better than the Bjorn. It really is an amazing carrier and I can’t imagine being a city mom without it.
