Gearhead Mom

I am a toy gearhead. I am a mom. Therefore, I am Gearhead Mom. I review the good, the bad and the (often) ugly in the world of baby and childhood gear.

You know how sometimes you see a product on the market and think, I THOUGHT OF THAT FIRST! Oh right, I thought of it and then wished someone else would go through all those tiresome details and create it for me.

This is the case with the Bella Band. Jenny is sure she invented it first (that and the play-cafe idea). We even tried coming up with names for it; my suggestion was the “Tummy Tube Top” or something equally ridiculous. When I was pregnant, Jenny went shopping for circus tent maternity clothes with me and she described her invention. Not 20 minutes later, we walked into a store and there it was, the Bella Band. I never got around to buying one, mainly because I had plenty of long tank tops from Old Navy, but I could always use the excuse that it was to show my solidarity to Jenny and the outrage of someone running to market with HER million dollar idea.

My friend Kate wrote to me the other day about the pure delight brought to her wardrobe by said bands, so here are her thoughts after the jump.

I saw the post about the pregnancy suspenders. I haven’t used them, but I have used (and LOVE) the Bella Band, which is basically for the same purpose. I used it in early pregnancy to hold up non-maternity pants that would no longer button and to hold up maternity pants that I was not quite big enough for yet. The Bella Band creates a nice, smooth look under clothes and also allows you to wear non-maternity shirts longer (that otherwise would be too short) by creating a layered look, it just looks like a camisole underneath. They even make it with lace edging if you want a fancy camisole look.

I then went through a period when my cute, comfortable demi-panel maternity pants fit just fine and I didn’t need the Bella Band. However, my ever expanding stomach has caused the cute demi-panel pants not to fit anymore, since my belly keeps pushing them down. I am now big enough to need the Full Panel Pant, the ones that make you feel like a complete whale. The Bella Band has returned to help with that issue; it keeps early maternity styles from falling down later in pregnancy, thus expanding the life of all of your maternity clothes.

Some people claim they were able to wear non-maternity clothes their whole pregnancy using the Bella Band but I don’t know who those people are…I definitely am not one of them. But it has been great, stylish, and comfortable. Amazon sells them, as does Nordstrom, a lot of maternity stores (but not Motherhood, they sell a knockoff which does not work as well!).  They come in a variety of colors, I only own one in black and really never feel like I need more than one.

Thanks, Kate! Hope your pants stay up for another few months!
