Bending Wax Stix (instead of my ear)
Posted by Jenny M. @ 8:40 AM
A friend of mine came to visit us over the winter holidays and like any industrious parent, brought along with her some cool tricks and toys. The most notable? Wikki Stix or Bendaroos, which she declared a lifesaver on the airplane ride.
My children and I hadn’t seen them before, but our four- and six-year-olds got busy right away twisting them into shapes…and…well, I could have stopped right there at: They Got Busy (and quiet, I might add). I vowed to pick some up the next time I saw them, and it wasn’t until right before our Spring Break trip to the midwest that I remembered these little gems and grabbed a set at Target. They’re cheap, light, and compact. And reusable. After my daughters collaborated on a Bendaroo hamburger, I straightened them up and packed them back away.
I now keep a set of Bendaroos in my purse, and they appropriately distracted my children on Sunday at the coffee shop where I wanted to eat my breakfast at less-than-breakneck speed. The two-year-old at the adjacent table was fascinated, and we offered her some strands. Her mom thanked me profusely. “It’s the first time I forgot the crayons,” she moaned. Bendaroos, it turns out, are a neat alternative to drawing. And while they require a little parental involvement from time to time, they can be addictive fun, even for grown-ups.
When we left, I told our neighbor and her kiddo to keep the sticks for later. “In the universal bank of moms helping other moms, you’ll have a chance to make a deposit soon enough,” I noted.
P.S. Some restaurants, I learned, are passing these out in lieu of crayons and coloring books for their younger patrons. Bendaroos/Wikki Stix make great stocking stuffers, Easter basket treats, birthday presents…
