Fun Winter Pop Up Book
Posted by Missy W. @ 12:50 PM
The folks over at Simon and Schuster sent me some books to review. The first one I am tackling is Snow Bugs, A Wintery Pop-up Book by David A. Carter. Now this was my first introduction to Carter’s hugely popular Bugs. He has written about a cagillion books about these little critters, celebrating Hanukkah, Halloween, jingling, peeking, you name it.
The premise is simple; sometimes Carter creates bugs out of thematic items (coats, mittens, snowballs, snowflakes), sometimes they are just cute bugs doing cute things (ice skating, catching “freshies”). To me, the bugs are not the real standout, although my four year old would be quick to disagree. She has a great love for Ice Skating Bug. The extra special part about this book (and series, I am sure) are the actual pop-ups. The cuts are so intricate and the pop-ups up-pop in spectacular fashion. I’m shocked that the book is valued at only $11.99. The snowman is our favorite. He’s enormous and fascinating and three dimensional and layered and cute as a button and Very Easy for my one year old to pull apart. That brings me to my one warning - do not leave these books unattended! In fact, I think this is the sort of book you keep out only for the occasion and then put away, otherwise it wouldn’t last a season. My little G is a very gentle dude, and he’s almost pulled the Busy Bug Skiers right off their slope.
So far a pop-up book, this book gets high scores from my kids, I think we have read it every day since it arrived in the mail. As a parent and librarian of our home, I have to make sure it is not always accessible, which for a book, seems counterintuitive.
Dear IRS, I am * totally * keeping this book, valued at $11.99. There is no way I could wrestle it out of my four year old’s arms.

We have a few of his collection, all are fabulous! We told the rough and tumble 3 year old boy to be gentle and he does the one-finger-touch on all the bugs about three times a day. Good keeper!
