GHM Fave: Best One Year Old Toy
Posted by Missy W. @ 10:34 AM
Any one year old I know will be your best friend for life if you give them wheels, anything with wheels. Once those wee ones can locomote in a homosapien sort of way, they are thrilled with rolling on down the hall with as many accoutrements as they can handle. While I was getting Baby G’s room ready, I pulled out all of Sy’s old toys and came across a favorite wheeled wonder that Sy was given at birth. I had put this wooden push toy away when she was probably about two and realize now I never should have done that! She was thrilled to see this old friend and has played with it almost daily for the past four months.
Any push toy will do, really, but we are big friends of the Selecta brand, a German toy company committed to using sustainable woods and beeswax finishes in their toys. What does Sy find appealing about this wacky wheeled friend? When she was younger, she’d pretty much just love to run down the hall like a bat out of hell with the thing, careening around corners while holding on for dear life. Nowadays the toy is used in more make-believe play, but she still enjoys it nonetheless. We also like to use it to extract small toys and various snack food items from the depths of the sofa, a task in which Sy has become very adept.
I like to give wooden push toys as gifts; they are not as huge and hulking as push cars (and won’t leave as big of a dent in a wall), they are well made and lovely to hold, and even I like to run holding onto it. It definitely unleashes my inner one year old.
Snapshot:
Easy to push.
Easy on the eyes.
Easy to use as a under-the-sofa toy extractor.
Easy to give as a gift because you are not adding yet another piece of molded plastic to another home.
I’m always afraid I am going to step on it in the middle of the night and snap it right in half.
