I am a toy gearhead. I am a mom. Therefore, I am Gearhead Mom. I review the good, the bad and the (often) ugly in the world of baby and childhood gear.

Great Rattle Gift

Rattling Caterpillar

By Haba

This is one of my favorite go-meet-the-new-baby gifts. It’s made in Germany using wood and a non-toxic finish. The rattle makes a very satisfying clackety-clack noise and has a high gummability factor. It also makes a great gift-topper if you are going all out for a shower present.

Haba is an eco-friendly toy company based out of Germany. In light of all the toy recall issues, they have a lengthy page on toy safety on their site which explains which country produces which toys.

Haba suggests you attach this cutie-pie rattle to Junior’s stroller for maximum enjoyment. I love the way the smooth wood finish feels against my fingers. It’s a supremely well made rattle. Rah Rah Haba!

I’m crazy about all things Haba and my 6 month old is desperately in love with their pacifier holder.  It clips onto her stroller and has lots of delicious things to jam in one’s mouth.  As a new mom I feel slightly freaked out about all the crazy plastic made in China stuff that has suddenly entered my house and Haba feels safe and clean in compare.  I’m adding the caterpillar to my list of things to buy!

We have a different Haba teething toy (which I love) but I could still barely walk away from the cute display featuring this fine rattle.  They’re all so freaking cute and every so slightly different that it’s hard to resist!

May I also give a shoutout to the expensive but safe Sophie le girafe?

We have a similar Haba rattle, in the shape of a fish. My daughter loves it and I often find myself clacking it as well.

Word of advice: tie it to something or make sure you have good dental insurance. My 6 month old holds it by the string and whips it around at high velocity when it’s loose.
