Retract-A-Gate

The Retract-A-Gate is hands-down the best gate ever. I’ve owned several different respected types of gates, so I feel I can make such a bold statement. Sure, safety is the No. 1 concern—and it meets all those requirements with flying colors—but the main reason why I love this gate is because it practically disappears and is so easy to operate.

When it’s open, there’s no hard metal gate to swing back and whack your kid or animal in the face. Instead, it rolls into itself. And when you have the energy to throw an adult soiree but don’t want
your house screaming “I have crazy kids crawling all over!!!” all you gotta do is unhook the gate from its hinges using a little elbow grease. On the website, you can buy multiple hinges and install them at other locales, and simply move the gate for use somewhere else. I installed my gate at the top of the stairs to my outdoor deck. The entry is at an odd angle and didn’t have enough clearance to accommodate a traditional swing-out gate. But because the Retract-A-Gate swivels, it can be installed at corners or walls that don’t line up, and it works perfectly and safely. The manufacturer claims it can withstand inclement weather, and so far it hasn’t had any problems. In addition, it has withstood cat scratches and territorial animal sprays, as well as the kicks, grabs and pokes of toddlers.

The only bummer about this product is that it comes in one color: “café latte” (light tan). Luckily, the color available works well with my deck. I know I’m going to risk sounding like an infomercial here, but don’t be fooled by the imitators out there, whose products are available at Babies ‘R’ Us. Sure, they come in white, but their quality sucks compared to this gate and they’re more expensive.

Thank you. I’ve been eyeing this gate for a week or so, trying to figure out whether it was the right purchase for us as it is one of the few that will install on an actual angle… but I was unsure as, like you said, if it would “really” accommodate the angle we have which includes walls that don’t match up. After reading this review, I am confident in this purchase.

Thank you!

Were you able to find a coupon code for this gate?  I saw on the order form where there is a spot, but I can not find one anywhere.  Ugh!  I want two and some extra hardware and it is almost $300.00.

No, I was unable to find one….  My total before shipping is 261.00 as well! Ugh!!  I may call them and ask.  It can’t hurt, right?

I have a Kiddyguard that I’ve had for 5+ years and really like it, but it doesn’t come in an extra wide size.  This one should be great.  I like that it’s US made and the coupon code for the 1/2 off extra brackets worked like a champ ... thanks!

I have had these gates for four years for my dogs and just ordered more and more brackets for my ten month old.  I absolutely LOVE them and they still look and work like brand new.  This was such a great find after years of filling our basement with bad, cheap, awful gates.

We initially were very happy with ours too, but now have discovered it isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.  We no longer feel safe with our gates.  Our 20 month old is able to pull the bottom up in the middle and scoot under it.  Beware.

After investigating several gates for extra wide areas, we purchased 2 so as to contain our large puppy. It took her 1 week (if that) to also figure out how to push through at the very bottom of the gate then scooted under it as Eric also commented.
The company suggested that our puppy might need to be “conditioned” to not use this escape method. Not realistic for us, but they were happy to have us return the gates if we were unsatisfied. We kept them and placed a long piece of extra baseboard on the opposite side with a few free weights (not the prettiest of options; you probably have a better idea here) to keep it in place. Worked until she grew taller than the gate!

I have two Retract-A-Gates gates for my 11 month old.  I looked at Retract-A-Gate and Kiddyguard.  The retract a gate has significant advantages (in addition to quality and ease of use) in one hand operation and ability to use in multiple locations.  The Kiddyguard makes a loud clicking sound if you try to use one hand—you must use two hands to close it quietly.  It is also fixed to one location.  Retract-a-Gates bracket system allows you to move the gate to multiple locations, so you don’t need as many of them.  The lock mechanism is also easier to operate and the gate looks to be of higher quality versus the Kiddyguard (not to mention $20 cheaper).

We too had to place boards at bottom of gate so small dog couldn’t escape underneath. there was not enough tension in the gate since we had to use almost the full 72” allowed. Tried to return but they offered other suggestions. Then puppy chewed hole in gate near bottom handle so that was the end of any return ever happening. Now we have a nice retractable gate but have to constantly move boards, which defeats the whole purpose of having a gate like this. I would not purchase again.

Thanks so much for posting this.  I have been looking for a gate for the top of my stairs and didn’t want a swing gate.  Sounds like I have made the right choice.  Oh, the coupon code worked and I received $6.95 off for the extra brackets.

The Retract-a-Gate is far superior product to the Kiddyguard. I do wish they made it in white.

Thanks too all who posted comments regarding the retract-a-gate.  The top of out stairs has a post on one side and a hand rail on the other.  Not really suitable for a conventinal top of the stairs baby gate.  I really think this may be the way to go.  Again, thanks for your comments.

BEWARE - This gate is good for young kids just starting to walk but not as great for older toddlers.  Our 20 month is able to squeeze under it pretty easily.  Also, she ran into it while closed and both the brackets broke - we use the bannister adapter.

I’m thinking the dog and 20 month old must be pretty small, with this gate locked, there is no way our 11 month old could fit underneath it.  Well, now that I say that I realize at the 97+ percentile for both height and weight, our 11 month old might be bigger than a small 20 month old (and definitely a puppy).

I don’t like the color, but it’s the only one big enough and that retracts automatically and quietly, I’ve done a lot of research.

I don’t know how this works for children, but it does NOT work for cats. Check out this video of my cat easily crawling under the gate. There are some videos on youtube with dogs getting under and over it too.

I was looking at this for my cat but after learning that is doesn’t work well for cats, I’m wondering if anyone has suggestions.  I want to keep my cat out of our living room when we are not at home - any ideas (besides putting up a door which is not feasible).  Thx

Thanks for this review! I have been considering this gate for a while now.  I have two staircases and need four gates. I know I need the banister kits….6 of them at $24 bucks each!!  Has anyone had experience with making their own banister adaptors, is there really anything special about their kit other than a piece of wood to drill the brakets into and plastic ties? Any thoughts much appreciated!

I bought this gate for use in a daycare center, and it was great at first, but the spring lost its retracting strength after about 5 months.I have emailed the company twice and have gotten no response.

I have had my gate for over two years and we use it A LOT but just recently started having problems with the spring.  I emailed the company and had a response within the hour.  I haven’t tried it yet but this was their suggestion.  Hope it helps.
Here’s something you can try to put a little additional tension on the spring:  Pass the handle rod counter-clockwise back through and between the reel of fabric and the rear tie rod.  Doing this once or twice will add tension to the mesh/spring. Only do it one turn at a time, then test and don’t go more than about 3 turns total.  The easiest way to do this is to pull the mesh out about 1-2 feet, set the lock, then do as described above.

I did hear from the company right away after my second email, and it turned out they never received the first one. It was a “cyber-problem,” not the fault of the company. They recommended the same thing that Bev said (above), and it’s working fine!

@John: I watched your videos at YouTube. I thought some of the comments there had merit. If you stand there and call your cat over and over and over then of course it’s much more likely that he will try harder to find a way around or under the gate. And someone else commented there that it appears as though you installed the gate incorrectly, as the brackets appear to be installed at the incorrect height and the fabric isn’t as taut as it’s supposed to be. Try re-installing the brackets at the correct height/position (if you haven’t already) and see if that doesn’t help. Also, stop calling your cat from the other side of the gate.

Disagree 100% =
Gate is good for little ones…but once they start to walk they will hang all over the gate and pull on it. Aslo, after about a year, the spring wears out, and if you have little dogs they will wedge under to get through. I would not recomned this gate and I would never ever use it at the top of the stairs. Go with Kid-co. These look nicer, but Kid-co is safer and better. I have three of these gates and have replaced them all with Kid-co.
