Keep Your Hands Clean Viciously Clean

I can’t believe I keep forgetting to write about one of my favorite cleaning products of 2008. Now that it’s almost St. Patrick’s Day, I might as well talk about a green product. (I know, I’m just that funny, aren’t I?)

My friend DeAnna, of Simple Peace (beautiful, organic and reusable shopping bags), turned me on to Modern Mermaids cleaning products last fall. DeAnna was at a trade show and started talking to Amy and Audra, tried their products and became an instant convert. She told me about their greatness, I called them, they sent me samples, I used every last drop and now I’m here to tell you to go check them out.

Modern Mermaids home, hand and pet cleaning products are made from:

Sy has such major allergy/asthma issues that the idea of greener cleaners is very palatable to me. The less indoor pollution in my house and on our bodies, the better. I got my hands on the kid’s foaming hand cleaner and I was hooked.

Modern Mermaids’ kid’s line is called Daisy (and Dude) Vicious. Here’s what the site says about their Vicious Vanish hand cleaners:
Formulated for kids! Fights germs and bacteria in a natural way with a great peppermint scent. Vicious Vanish has extremely small molecules called “colloidal micelles”. They break apart larger molecules into biodegradable components and mechanically remove bacteria and viruses. Hypoallergenic for sensitive skin. Ingredients - Purified Water, Fatty Acids, Coconut Oil, Folic Acid, Minerals and Enzymes derived from Edible and Seed-Bearing plants, Essential Oil of Peppermint. How refreshing to be able to pronounce everything on an ingredient list.

Here’s what I like about the product
It’s not terribly expensive ($3.99) and you can get a discount if you buy more than ten at at time.
It smells sooooo good. Lovely, mellow minty smell. It’s not at all perfume-y or over-powering. It also doesn’t scream “boy” or “girl” to me. It just smells clean. Sy is a big fan of the smell and getting to slosh foamy stuff all around her hands. She is also NOT a fan of having dirty hands, so this is an exciting product for her.
The product foams well and dries relatively quickly.
It’s a pump bottle so it’s larger than the mini-alcohol Purel type bottles, but it’s not so huge that it wouldn’t fit into my pocket on a jaunt to the uber-dirty swings.

I also love that Modern Mermaids was created by two women who wanted to make a difference. I’ll be trying the concentrated all-purpose cleaner next. DeAnna says it can make moldy corners a thing of the past. I’ll try anything to avoid using bleach.
