I am a toy gearhead. I am a mom. Therefore, I am Gearhead Mom. I review the good, the bad and the (often) ugly in the world of baby and childhood gear.

My husband’s all time favorite Sesame Street song is the all cast sing-a-long, “Do De Duck.” Even Kermit makes a cameo. He found it on You Tube and hoped Sy would feel the same way. She could have cared less. He was undaunted. He decided to change his strategy so that she too, could learn the brilliance that is a Sesame Street song and dance number. His next ploy was to come home with the “What’ the Name of That Song?” DVD, a 35th anniversary DVD with seventeen terrific Sesame Street songs, including Bert’s “Doin the Pigeon,” a hilarious Jerry Lee Lewis homage, “Eight Balls of Fur,” and “Do De Duck” to name a few. Sy was about two at the time, and again, could have cared less. The allure of Sesame Street eluded her. She’d watch the show for about three minutes and ask to turn it off. She preferred Maisy to Sesame Street and Queen Latifah’s rap about a missing letter O scared her. Rog did not give up.

I think part of the reason he was so determined is because as parents, we all grew up on the Street, too. It’s part of our heritage as American television watching kids. I don’t know about you, but I was pretty pissed when they changed Snufalapugus’ name to Snuffy. What’s up with that? I mean, we all learned how to say it, didn’t we? Anyway, he’d put the DVD in every few weeks and see how she reacted. One day Sy clued in that Super Grover FLIES in the beginning of this DVD (he’s the narrator throughout this video). After that, all bets were off. Oh how Sy loves Super Grover. She thinks it’s hilarious when he falls out of the sky. Nothing like a little physical comedy to make a two year old love you forever. She’s also a pretty musical kid, so once she got to know the characters and learned the melodies of the songs, it’s been one of her favorite DVDs. Much to Roger’s chagrin, “Do De Duck” is not especially one of her favorites. She prefers the piano based “Eight Balls of Fur” (it’s hilarious when the pianist breaks the piano), Queen “Tifah’s” rap (the video part where Telly loses his O in the alley is no longer a fear factor) and Wayne Brady’s giggle-inducing rendition of “Between.”

Snapshot:
Clocking in at fifty minutes, it’s good to break this up over a few watching times. Or really long car trips!
Since I get sucked in every time Sy is watching it, I have no complaints. It’s a feel good DVD full of nothing but wonderful muppetry, singing and old-school Sesame Street good vibes.
