I am a toy gearhead. I am a mom. Therefore, I am Gearhead Mom. I review the good, the bad and the (often) ugly in the world of baby and childhood gear.

Move over Snack Trap, there’s a new spill resistant infant and toddler snacking cup that is both BPA and phthalate-free and manufactured in the good old United States of America; Sonoma, California to be specific in town. Invented by a grandfather of six and manufactured by a machine he built, the Munchie Mug is committed to child safety and parent convenience.

The Munchie Mug when dropped or turned upside down does not spill any little snacking treasures inside out onto the carpet, couch, backseat of the car, grocery store floor, etc. It is made of 100% recyclable polypropylene #5 and all FDA food-grade approved materials. The Munchie Mug is dishwasher safe and baby safe. The soft fabric enclosure overlaps to keep snacks in, and it is soft enough to not irritate little hands trying to get snacks out.

OK. Sounds good, right? But let’s get down to brass tacks - did my girl like it?

I handed Sy the Munchie Mug (or Punchie Punch as she calls it) and told her it was her new snack containment device. She told me that it was actually for her smaller toys and ran off with it, not to be found for days. I found the lid in a box of kitchen toys and the rest of the container filled with dinosaurs underneath a bean bag. Once I recovered all the necessary parts and washed it off, we were good to go. I put an assortment of her favorite munchies (O’s, orange crackers and raisins) in and left it on her table for her. She cracked up. She thought it was hilarious that she put her hand in through the soft fabric and out popped a magic treat. At first I thought my little control freak would be annoyed that she couldn’t see what she was pulling out of the mug, but she seemed tickled that it was a surprise. On our second car voyage with the mug, she was a little perturbed that she couldn’t find her crackers. I figured it was a good way to practice invisible shape sorting, so I told her to feel the shapes and try to grab whichever one it was she wanted. We started discussing the difference between circles (O’s) and ovals (raisins) and of course her favorites, the squares. I also showed her how to pull apart the soft fabric opening to see what was inside. She preferred the invisible sorting. She also likes to pull treats out and line them up on TOP of the mug. Because of the high lip on the mug, the treats don’t slide off.

Why do I like Munchie Mug more than the Snack Trap? The lid doesn’t pop off the way a Snack Trap does, which means way less O’s on the floor of the car. It holds a lot of snack, but it won’t go stale since it comes with a removable lid for storage (you have to buy them separately with the Snack Trap). The whole thing is dishwasher safe. Soft fabric opening means no pinched hands. It has a little hole on the top so you can grab onto it, or loop a linker through it so you don’t lose it on stroller rides. I have to say, I was quite pleased with this containment device and wholeheartedly recommend it.

Snapshot:
Easy to use, clean and kid friendly.
More expensive than a Snack Trap, but it’s way better mousetrap, or rather, snacktrap.
Great shower present!
