Gearhead Mom

I am a toy gearhead. I am a mom. Therefore, I am Gearhead Mom. I review the good, the bad and the (often) ugly in the world of baby and childhood gear.

Sometimes I just don’t have it in me to cart around Sy’s diaper bag. And sometimes it just does not match my dress or my attitude. There are days when I don’t feel like advertising that I am a mom. Of course, having a sticky, silly two year old attached to me at the hip is a dead give away. Anyway, when you crave your own accessories, it’s good to grab a bigger handbag from your superior (ha) collection and throw in one of the following little bags:

Diapees and Wipees Accessory Bag. The name alone is so silly but it’s a simple idea that is really well executed. It’s a washable cloth bag that fits a small container of wipes and a couple of diapers (gets tighter as the diaper size goes up). I can also wedge a small tube of diaper cream in there and call it a day. These bags come in a ton of cute patterns. I have the monkey one and love it, as does Sy. The quote on their website cracks me up, ““Dallas moms will snap these up faster than lipstick at Neiman Marcus”. - D MagazineIs it true, Dallas Moms?

Skip Hop Pronto Mini Changer: When I take care of my friend Micky’s daughter, Kara, she usually throws this in her bag. It folds out easily and you can access the items quickly. I like how it has a detachable changing pad, so you can take it or leave it, depending on where you are going. When I travel I usually have more gear with me (shocking, I know) so I take my basic black Jansport backpack instead of the diaper bag. This would be perfect to add to the mix. I’d have a go-to place for diapers and a clean area to change Sy, since airport bathrooms are not exactly the poster-child for cleanliness.

Patemm Pad: Andie has this changing pad and absolutely loves it. When you unfold it, the pad turns into a big circle, which is great for squirmy bottoms. It’s made of oilcloth and stuffed with a little polyester batting for comfort. Patemm Pads come in varying sizes and colors. I like that it’s got such a great wipability factor. OK, OK, I know that was not a word. But you know what I mean, right? You can dunk it in the sink if you need to and it’s clean in no time. Oh, and Andie wanted me to tell you that the pad features four pockets around the perimeter that you can stuff wipes (in a Ziploc) and diapers and anything else somewhat small and flat.

Snapshot:
A mini changing station or diaper carrying case is great for the parents out there who long for organization in the chaotic world of child-rearing. Ha ha. Get it? Child-rearing. Rear ends, changing diapers. Boy do I think I am funny late at night.
