Gearhead Mom

I am a toy gearhead. I am a mom. Therefore, I am Gearhead Mom. I review the good, the bad and the (often) ugly in the world of baby and childhood gear.

Ed. Note: Adrienne from blankyclip asked GHM to review her new product, and I have to say I was a little bit sad when I realized my kids were too old to review it. How did they get so big already? So thanks to my friend Anne for reviewing it for us! Take it away, Anne.

I was given the opportunity as the mother of a fresh baby boy to review blankyclip, the “only plush toy that doubles as a loose tension clip, specifically designed to hold blankets onto strollers, bouncy seats, swings, etc.” I figured why not, as I had only recently realized that I misplaced my favorite Little Giraffe blanket and figured that it most likely fell off of my stroller or carseat. Before the clips came in the mail I checked out the website and while I thought they were cute and smart and seemed to be useful, honestly my first thought was, can I picture myself using these? Like, am I too “cool” to have a duckie or lamb or a teddy bear clip hanging off of my gear?

Because I am sooo cool.

Fast forward to a few days after they arrived and we took them for a spin at the Zoo. If there is anywhere to road-test baby gear for a stroller, the Zoo is the place. Stroller central. I used the little duckie blankyclips to clip the lightweight but warm and soft blanket to the carseat in our jogger. Because we live in wet climate, the clips were very effective at keeping the drizzle from coming through the crack between the carseat canopy and our jogger canopy. If the sun were shining, they would have been just as effective!  I had tried to slip a blanket through the handle of the carseat for this purpose before and it kept sliding off. blankyclip success!

The next opportunity to road-test these was on our car trip home from the Zoo. They worked great to secure the blanket over the window when the sun was at the wrong angle! I also found an opportunity to utilize them during one of my 4 1/2 yr old’s play dates. I used the clips to secure blankets for a “fort” they were stringing across the living room. Success!  Speaking of my 4 1/2 year old - one drawback to the clips is that they are so cute that my daughter often carts them off to play with and I have to search for them among her lined up “stuffies”.

Oh, and I must not forget the latest use, I recently used the clips to secure the blanket over my shoulder at the park when I forgot my “hooter hider”. It worked pretty well and considering that the duckie was pinned to my shoulder. I obviously I got over my worries about being too “cool”!  But that goes out the door with a second child pretty darn quickly.

Snapshot:
* This blankyclip = great multi-tasker: keeps blankets and forts secure, while not totally crushing your cool-cred.
* Easy to use and not pinchy.
* The prices for the blankyclips vary: $15.00 for one clip or $48.00 for a set of two with a blanket. After polling many momma friends, we have decided that the price of the clip/blanky combo is on the higher side for gear, but a great idea for a shower present.

What is also interesting that this is a problem where simple attention, exposure, got it to disappear. Where the old “power of the pen” becomes reaffirmed in the internet age.
