I mentioned TruKid, a cool momma-run company, last month but now I’ve tried the line, so as usual, I have more to say.

TruKid is a natural skin care line for children, which means no icky parabens or other harsh preservatives. The line is cheerfully packaged, easy to use and fairly priced, which is great considering TruKid tries to use as many organic ingredients as they can.

Out of the whole line, I have two favorites: the sunscreen and the lip balm. The lip balm tastes like spearmint without being overwhelming, which is nice for the younger customers involved. Of course, I never gave Sy a chance to get her gummy paws on the lip balm, because channeling my fine toddler, I decided it was MINE ALL MINE. But I think it would be a nice mild flavor for the five and up set, especially if your youngin is starting to transition from fruity flavored toothpaste to a minty one.

My other fave is the Sunny Days sunscreen, which we also use the most (daily). Sunny Days is a really thick, mineral based SPF 30 sunscreen. I find that it takes quite a while to soak in, and sometimes Sy looks like she has not washed her hair in a week if I get too much on her forehead. I absolutely love the clean floral scent. I use it for myself if I remember early enough, but if I think about it right before I am putting on makeup, I skip it since it takes a while to sink in to my parched skin. You are supposed to apply every 80 minutes, which I never do, I’ll have to see during summer if that makes a difference or not. TruKid also has a sunscreen stick, which I keep in the diaper bag. The Sunny Days liquid sunscreen comes in a pump format, so unfortunately you can’t really take that one on the go. (10/26/08 UPDATE: I saw this sunscreen the other day at a local shop and noted that they changed the lid to a non-pump top. Excellent!)

Oh! I also love the Hero Stick. I put it on a multitude of owies and bumps (versus Arnica which you cannot put on abrasions). Today I got bitten by a friendly spider and it was super itchy and I could not stop obsessing about the swollen bump. I remembered the Hero Stick waiting to save the day in the cabinet and slid some over the bite. So that was the last time I noticed the bite, no more itch. How cool is that? It also smells yummo. I wonder if the yummy smells entice some wee ones to take a taste or two.

A lot of the products say 3+, but the site says most products are OK for 6 months and up. I emailed the company and they replied that their products are “great from babies to big kids. We have to put an age on the bottles because technically a baby can’t apply products to themselves. Our products are so pure and free of all toxic chemicals that anyone can use them. Most pediatricians do recommend waiting until a baby is 6 months old before applying sunscreen.”

Snapshot:
• The natural smells are clean and strong, without being overwhelming. I think it’s great that they have made a healthy product line that actually does what it says it does.
• No parabens or other bad guys. Check out the Toxic Bad Guys list that you can download off the site to keep in your wallet while you shop.
• I wish the bottled products were in larger sizes. If it were 8 oz sizes instead of 4 oz, we’d be using half as much packaging. I assume they did this to make it more usable to smaller hands.
• From the TruKid site: Did you know with all of the personal care products you use every day, you could be putting toxins into your body up to 25 times a day.
• The line is available via TruKid or Amazon
