Gearhead Mom

I am a toy gearhead. I am a mom. Therefore, I am Gearhead Mom. I review the good, the bad and the (often) ugly in the world of baby and childhood gear.

Rickrack Headbands

Rickrack Headbands

Sy is completely obsessed with headbands right now. Thank goodness for the dollar spot at Target. I can just imagine how posh she’d look in this awesome rickrack headband by Holly Stewart of Jane Edward.

She also makes sweet rick rack burp cloths, groovy key fobs, and belts for girls too. Stocking stuffers!

nkotb Is Not Size Discriminatory

nkotb Is Not Size Discriminatory

Admit it. You loved nkotb. Who didn’t want to hang tough with Jordan or Danny? Anyway, Roger sent me this link so that even Baby G can represent. Not.

babysoy is babysoft

babysoy is babysoft

We are very lucky to be the recipients of at least four different sets of hand-me-downs in the Super Cute Boy Baby Clothing department.  Baby G has about 50 options each morning as Sy and I pick out his outfit. Lucky for Sy (she loves to do the selecting), G is a spitter-upper of epic proportions, so we change his clothes a LOT during the day. One of my favorite hand-me-down bibs is from babysoy, a company I’d never heard of before G’s arrival. It’s the softest damn piece of clothing I’ve ever felt. I try to keep it on him as long as possible (about two hours, given his spittyuppiness) because I love to feel it against my skin. I did some reading and found out that the entire line over at babysoy is made from soybean fiber. How cool is that? Eco-friendly, sustainable and soft as hell.

Dunno what soybean fiber is? Neither did I.  Soybean protein fiber is a sustainable and botanical textile fiber made from renewable and biodegradable natural resources - the leftover soybean pulp from tofu and soy milk production. Its 16 amino acids are healthy and nutritional for our skin. It is a green textile fiber that possesses the superiorities of many natural and synthesized fibers.

And like all totally bitchin companies out there, it was started by a MOM who wanted to do her daughter right in this world.

Goorin Brothers Are Seriously Bold Hatmakers

Goorin Brothers Are Seriously Bold Hatmakers

My totally hip neighbors hooked baby G up with this awesome hat made by none other than the Goorin Brothers. Never heard of ‘em? Yeah, me neither. Apparently four generations of these gents have been advancing the art of hatmaking since 1895. Where has my head been?

According to their site, “Goorin Brothers is bringing back the hat with vigor and purpose, appealing to a very special class in society. The New Royal Class, as Goorin sees it, is comprised of those creative, unique individuals found in every walk of life who blaze their own trails. These original thinkers thrive in an atmosphere of underground inspiration and want a hat that will help them express their distinctive spirit. Wear a Goorin hat and you can tell your story without ever having to say a word… Like you, perhaps, a Goorin hat is full of contradictions: It is timeless and timely, grounded and groundbreaking. Rooted in tradition, yet calling for change. You are defined by the hat you wear. VIVA LA REVOLUTION!”

WELL OK! Hat revolutions aside, I need to tell you that this is one seriously bitchin hat. It’s jaunty. It’s saucy. It’s incredibly well made with a tragically hip and modern fabric. The kids’ hats don’t break the bank, either; G’s new little duck billed “Cruz” hat is $23.00, and even better than that, it’s on sale online! Goorin Brothers have a couple of retail locations in California, but are easy to buy online through their site. They have easy sizing charts for kids on the site, so you can whip out your little sewing kit measuring tape and measure your hipster’s noggin accordingly.

I cannot wait to put G in this little number. I’m crossing my fingers that he loves hats as much as I do. I’m currently eying the “Fergie” for myself. Gotta keep up with my ultra fashion conscious offspring, right?

Giddy Giddy Makes Me Giddy

Giddy Giddy Makes Me Giddy

I think Teri Dimalanta has super powers. Not only does she have kids, but she also co-runs Kukunest, my favorite organic bedding line. She must have been three people in her last life because she has yet another line to wow us with, giddy giddy. Turns out Dimalanta is an investment analyst turned craftaholic mom. She is most giddy when sewing, painting, designing and making stuff. It was as if turning into a mom 4 years ago ignited the inner artist and crafter.

What inspired these handmade felt creations for little girls’ pretty little melons? The desperate need to tame her new daughter’s unwieldy mohawk with something cool, quirky, and fun. Equally important to creating adorable designs is making the clips functional and safe. These clips are intricately handcrafted with a snap clip sewn securely inside. They are designed to stay on, even on baby fine hair.

giddy giddy’s inventive line of handmade felt barrettes and felt pouches pouches had me at “Hello”. Too bad my girl refuses to wear barrettes because I’d have her decked out in these every day.

Make Sure They Look Cool, Too

Make Sure They Look Cool, Too

How cool would your four year old look sporting this guitar tee on the first day of school? I love Abe Jones and all that they design. They have a great collection for us to drool over. Their tees go from size 3-6 months to 8 years. Some of the Fall collection is already sold out on their site, but they have a pretty big list of retailers to choose from.

Oh, and if you have a girl, remember to check out Monkey Bar Buddies, close-fitting shorts to go under skirts. Wouldn’t want to be caught red-faced and shortless on Friday Flip Up Day.

Closed Toed Shoes

Closed Toed Shoes

A lot of schools do not allow flip flops or Crocs. The horror! Even though she has other alternatives, Sy wears her pink Crocs every single day. My sister just got my niece some sassy new Geox for the new school year. Check out the front - real patent leather! Talk about a trend setter.

Sassy Dress for YOU, Not Them

Sassy Dress for YOU, Not Them

Hey, if you get to drop your kiddo off at school this week, why not look totally hot yourself, too. I love just about every dress Anthropologie ever comes out with. I love the vintage feel to this “Sudden Downpour” dress. Wouldn’t it look great with some red flats? Of course the trick would be to not touch your child so that you actually look put together past drop off. Oh, and be able to afford the dress as well as preschool. A girl can dream.

Olive Juice Warehouse Sale

Ooh. There’s a fantastic warehouse sale going on over at Olive Juice Kids.

Colette Kids - Unisex Designs for the Little Ones

Colette Kids - Unisex Designs for the Little Ones

Mom/graphic designer Anita Lee recently introduced me to her sassy line of baby clothes, Colette Kids. I’m so glad she did; her line is perfect for a new baby gift. After years of designing for corporate clients, Anita decided to dabble into the world of fashion as she was expecting her own bundle of joy. Lucky us!

Colette Kids’ infant onesies are made with soft 100% USDA certified organic combed cotton, with sizes from 6 to 18m. The toddler tees are made with 100% combed cotton, with sizes 2T and 4T. All products are made in U.S.A. and individually silk-screened by hand. They are also cute as all get out.

I think Sy would look just smashing in a Ling Ling panda tee and I’m sure Offspring, Version 2.0 would look just as nifty all decked out in a Wilbur the turtle onesie.

I’m always so impressed with moms who achieve both career and child-rearing simultaneously. Add a splash of fashion to the mix and I’m your fan for life.

Ooh and even cooler! Colette Kids is offering a 10% discount for GHM readers (coupon code: gearheadmom10). Offer expires on 7/20.

Children’s Place = Best Place For Socks

The Children’s Place is offering our readers $10.00 off all orders over $75.00 through June 14th. Just enter code MSA68 at checkout. Thanks, Children’s Place!

My favorite item to purchase there is socks. Exciting stuff, but I’ve gone through a lot of socks with Sy and I think that Children’s Place has the best ones. They are thick without making her feet hot and they never slide down. That and they actually last the whole year that is emblazoned on the bottom of the sock. I find that their clothes usually run a size small for Sy, but not the socks, they are right on.

Karen Neuburger Infant Sock Love

Karen Neuburger Infant Sock Love

Omigoodness, I just got the cutest socks in the mail for Offspring, Version 2.0. I had no idea Karen Neuburger even had an infant line. My favorite chenille wear-around-the-house-at-night socks are from KN and I LOVE them. I honestly wear them every night. I’ve had them since before Christmas and they are just starting to show signs of wear. I will definitely replace them.

Japanese Weekend

Ooh. For all your preggos out there, Japanese Weekend is having a nice little sale. JW is one of my favorite upscale maternity clothing lines. And by upscale I mean expensive, so that means I own one item by them, but it’s really pretty. Thanks for the tip, sister.

New For Baby

New For Baby

I’ve been sorting through Sy’s old stuff getting ready for the next offspring, version 2.0. Poor kid is going to be dressed in stained hand-me-downs from the get go. I do want to get a few new things, I just can’t help it.

Enter the New For Baby clothing line. How cute is that one piece outfit? It feels slightly reminiscent of Star Trek, which is probably why I am so drawn to it. New For Baby has a great line of clothing for the wee ones. You won’t find any trucks, ducks or taglines here. Just rich, vibrant colors in hip, sleek designs. Sounds good to me.
