Gearhead Mom

I am a toy gearhead. I am a mom. Therefore, I am Gearhead Mom. I review the good, the bad and the (often) ugly in the world of baby and childhood gear.

Hurry Spring, Hurry!

Hurry Spring, Hurry!

I love spring. I think it’s one of my favorite seasons. Though I don’t think my husband and daughter, with all of their heinous allergies and asthma, would agree. I plan on celebrating the first day of spring by doing some old fashioned spring cleaning, another thing upon which my family would agree to disagree. After all that fun work, I promised Sy we’d hit the local craft store to get some hokey foam eggs to decorate. Hey, she can’t eat ‘em, she may as well decorate ‘em. I wasn’t sure what we were going to do with them, but I figured I’d be struck with inspiration once within the vast halls of Crafts R Us. But then, randomly, I received a free April issue of Better Homes and Garden yesterday, celebrating this very season. Although I don’t think I am exactly their demographic (Domino RIP), I was inspired by a few pages within the ‘zine. They had a cute set of foam eggs covered with crepe paper and decorated with large ribbons. Sy and I are going to try to replicate them tomorrow. I’ll take some pictures and let you know.

Another fabulous find within BHG was the coveted ceramic egg rack. Coveted you say? Well, by me anyway. Giada always uses one on her cooking shows and I’ve been looking for one for a year. Apparently they are not as easy to google unless it’s almost Easter…Anyway, there it was, big as day from a site called Greener Grass Design - for only ten bucks! I scooped one up and look forward to displaying fake eggs in it.

Santa Tracker

Check out NORAD’s Santa Tracker. I spent over a half hour doing this with my niece tonight. She totally geeked out when Santa landed in North America! He’s coming, he’s coming!
Awesome.

Spit Up Tip #1

I am on my second Child Who Loves to Spit Up After Every Meal. My in-between pregnancy and regular clothes wardrobe can’t take the heavy burden. I only have three shirts I can wear and/or can stand the sight of. I just remembered what my friend Emily used to do - she’d wear a big over-sized button down shirt over her regular outfit, then as she was leaving the house, she’d whip it off and be spit-up free. Brilliant!

If only I had one of those button down shirts. Details.

How to Start a Family Blog

How to Start a Family Blog

[Ed. Note: Thanks to my husband for writing this post. He is referred to as “tech support” by most of our family. He’s like our very own personal Geek Squad (I mean that in the nicest way, dude). So keep your eyes peeled for more technology-based reviews from Rog. Enjoy the first one!]

Our friends and family often request the latest pictures of our girl Sy or the newest thing she’s learned. Like most people, our relatives and friends are spread out across the country and even the world (West Coast, East Coast, Canada, UK, Switzerland, Asia). Sending emails everyday or even every week with pictures would be a little much. But having an online presence of some sort would solve the problem. That’s where the family website comes in.

We have a blog with our own domain name and that’s where we can post little updates. Our peeps can check the site and see that most recent pictures and read about the latest Sy-ism.

Here’s how to set up your own blog and keep your friends and family up to date.
